Phobos has strange stripes. Scientists solve the mystery of Mars’ moon
Phobos is one of two moons of Mars, which is distinguished by distinctive structures. They take the form of stripes, which scientists have looked at. They claim they may have solved their mystery. These strange structures of the moon Phobos may be a sign of what awaits it in the future after closer interaction with Mars.
Phobos is a moon of Mars that is close to the Red Planet. So much so that it is subject to greater tidal forces. It has been known for a long time that there are stripe-like structures on the surface of this object. A team of scientists decided to seek answers to questions related to their origin.
The research was conducted by a team of scientists led by Bin Cheng. They ran various computer simulations, and these showed that at least some (but not all) of Phobos’ stripes may come as a result of tidal forces from Mars.

Phobos is a moon that is close to Mars and moving closer to it all the time. Currently, the orbit lasts 7 h and 39 min. Every year the object approaches the Red Planet by about 1.8 cm. In fact, we may be witnessing the beginning of its end, as it will be torn apart in about 100 million years. It is worth mentioning that the Mars Express probe recently flew over it.
