Free throw seals game for Eisenhower, 46-45

by RICK DESOTELL
Observer Sports Writer
What's the difference between 14-4 and 9-9? In the case of the Romeo High School boys' basketball team, which has lost some tough games this year, five shots.
Friday night, Feb. 26, the Bulldogs had another heart breaker, losing to rival Utica Eisenhower, 46-45, on a last-second free throw.
Of all the losses, this one was especially painful because Romeo did pretty much everything right with their game plan; they just couldn't score.
"We forced 25 turnovers, but shot 33 percent from the floor,'' said Romeo Coach Dale Teller, who's team was 3-of-17 from 3-point range. "We only scored six points in the first quarter and we had forced nine turnovers. So that's a lot of missed opportunities. On the bright side, our defensive pressure was very good.''
The game itself was a tight, low scoring affair with Romeo, behind four points from Ryan Grzegorzewski, taking a 6-5 lead after one quarter of play.
The second quarter was a little better from an offensive standpoint with Eisenhower outscoring the Bulldogs 12-10 to take a 17-16 lead into the locker rooms.
"It's frustrating,'' Teller added. "When we space the floor and get good ball movement we're very good, but sometimes it seems like we're running in place. We played well enough to win, but then again I've said that before.''
Both teams made runs in the third but it was Ike who had the last good one, taking a 33-27 lead into the fourth quarter.
Romeo finally got going in the fourth thanks to a three-pointer by Jason Schirmer and bucket from guard Ryan Thomas to cut the Eagles lead to one, 33-32.
Eisenhower answered with another run to push the lead to 45-38, with just over two minutes remaining before Nathan Fraeyman hit a bucket and Grzegorzewski turned a steal into a conventional three-point play to cut the lead to two, 45-43, with just under a minute to play.
Ike tried to work the ball down the court to seal the game but Romeo's pressure got to them once again with Grzegorzewski stealing a pass and then making the layup, to tie the game at 45-45 with 11 left.
On the ensuing play, the Eagles inbounded the ball and worked it down the court when a foul was called, sending them to the free throw line where they made one of two to seal the game.
"It's frustrating because the kids worked really hard,'' said Teller. "Jason Schirmer played well as did Fraeyman and Taylor Brynaert. I still think we'll be a very dangerous team to play come playoff time.''
Thomas led Romeo (6-6 MAC Red) with 13 points followed by Grzegorzewski with 12. Spencer Szwejk had nine, Schirmer seven and Fraeyman four points for the Bulldogs who have two non-league games remaining before the state playoffs begin next week.
