The Romeo High School varsity hockey team finished its regular season with a 5-4 win over Stevenson on Saturday, Feb. 27.Bulldog seniors Scott Lanski, Brad Rice, Johnny Tiseo, Tyler Underhill, Ryan Axford , Zack Thom and Lucas Ciesliga were all honored, along with their parents. It was their last regular season game in a Romeo hockey jersey.The team finished the regular season 13101, tied for third in the MAC White Conference. The season marked the most games ever won won by a Romeo hockey team and was John Minjoe's first season as varsity head coach.ends season with win The team will enter the playoffs this week. The first period of the game was scoreless. The Bulldogs then got off to a quick start in the second period, with Underhill getting Romeo on the scoreboard first, with Brett Bradford and Alex Finazzo getting the assists on the goal. Rice followed up with a shorthanded, unassisted goal, picking up a loose puck along the boards and skated into the Titan zone, splitting the defense to beat the Stevenson goalie to make the score 20. Lanski gave Romeo a 30 lead with a powerplay goal shot from the top of the slot, with assists going to Rice and Garrett Hansen. Romeo got into penalty trouble toward the end of the second period which allowed Stevenson to score three goals in just over three minutes and let them back into the game with a tie score of 33 at the end of the second period. The Bulldogs came out strong in the third period with Tiseo scoring off a behind-the-net pass from Lanski a minute into the the period. Stevenson answered back three minutes later to tie the score 4-4, but Romeo got what turned out to be the game winner at the 9:11 mark in the game from Tiseo, who got off a quick shot from the front of the net. Finazzo and Kyle Nedbal got the assists on the game winner. The Bulldogs fought off a late period powerplay by Stevenson to take the win, 54. Thom and Zac Compeau shared the Bulldog netminding duties and got the win, with both goalies playing strong. Also that night, the varsity hockey team held a fundraiser for Stan Babinski, a 2008 Romeo High School graduate, who was diagnosed with lymphoma last year. Thanks to the generous donations of the Romeo hockey fans, $900 was donated to the Babinski family. On Saturday, Feb. 20, the Bulldogs defeated L'Anse Creuse, 9 -1. The Bulldogs got off to a quick start and never looked back. Four Romeo players had multiple goals in the game. Hansen had three goals and Lanski, Rice and Bradford each had two goals. Hansen also had three assists, Rice had two assists and Lanski one assist. Finazzo also had two assists. Underhill and Kyle Buchanan each added an assist. Anthony Grifka got the win in goal. |
