No. 2 seed Hartland ends
Romeo wrestler's state run

by RICK DESOTELL
Observer Sports Writer
After eight matches, the Romeo High School varsity wrestlers were down by just four points (19-15) to the number two seed Hartland at the MHSAA Wrestling Team State Quarterfinals held Friday, Feb. 26, at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, but three straight pins by Hartland at 140, 145 and 152 pounds gave the Eagles a 35-15 lead and they went on to win 47-21 over the seven-seeded Bulldogs to advance to the semifinals.
"We thought we had a good chance to beat Hartland, so it was a disappointing loss,'' Romeo Coach Jim Cali said. "We knew we had to wrestle a great match to pull off the upset, but, on paper, we thought we had a chance. We wrestled with heart, guts and emotion. It was a fun dual meet and a great experience. Kellogg Arena is a great venue. The energy in the building was awesome. The grand march is amazing. Being one of only eight teams walking around the arena to "We Are the Champions" is so cool. It is something we will never forget.''
The match started at 215-pounds with Hartland's Nick McDiarmid tech-falling Romeo's Joe Bacci 17-1 to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead.
Adam Bennett (285) gave Romeo a 6-5 lead when he pinned Hartland's Jon Meissner in 3:32 and Tayron Womble made it 9-5 with an 8-1 decision over Hartland's Alec Bain.
That was it for Romeo, as the Eagles would take the lead 13-9 with four-point major decision wins at 112 and 119 by Ross Kantola and Nick Monitz over Romeo's Sam Cali (9-1) and Joe Sinishtaj (13-2).
Keith Boldt continued the Hartland run with a pin over Josh Batch at 125-pounds with 5:50 left to make it 19-9, but the Bulldogs would end the streak at 130 with a 9-3 victory by Kyle Witgen over Chase Snider to cut the Eagles lead to 19-12.
Romeo's Jeremy Ward (135) cut the lead further with a hard fought 5-4 decision over Jeff Lopez to make it 19-15, but that was as close as the Bulldogs would get. Hartland took over from there with pins by John Julien at 140, Doug Baughman at 145 and Jesse Lashbrook at 152.
Zach Schafer stopped the bleeding for the Bulldogs with a pin at 160-pounds over Kyle Regorrah at 5:45 to make the score 37-21, but Hartland's Matt Ostermiller won an 18-9 major-decision over Orrin Bryant at 171 and Sean Wright won in 41-seconds with a fall over Shane Toreki to round out the scoring.
Hartland improved to 28-3, but would lose in the next round to Rockford. Novi Catholic Central won the title, beating Rockford in the finals.
"Our team wasn't even mentioned in the preseason for the Macomb County Tournament or the MAC Red,'' said Cali, whose team finished with a 34-13 overall record. "We were 8-6 at the beginning of the season, but the guys kept coming to practice, working hard and showing up for battle ready to go. We challenged them with a very tough schedule. In the long run, the tough matches provided them the opportunity to grow together. They represented the school, community and their families like champions. The growth of the team would not have been possible without Mike Stabley and Ryan Tiseo. They not only have wrestling knowledge, they provide great leadership for the guys. We had the best crowd we have had in Battle Creek since 1996. The parents have been great all year. We have been blessed with great parents ever since I have been at Romeo.''
Cali and the rest of the staff will now turn their attention to the Individual finals which will take place this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
The Bulldogs are sending five individual state qualifiers: Womble, Witgen, Ward, Schafer and Bennett. Check out www.romeowrestling.com for a schedule of events.
