semis after Oxford win by RICK DESOTELL
Last year, the Romeo High School girls' basketball team made it all the way to the regional finals before being knocked out of the MHSAA state tournament. And, even though it was new ground for the program, it's already paying dividends this year, as the Lady Bulldogs looked liked the more relaxed team Monday night, jumping out to an early lead in beating Oxford, 59-41. Observer Sports Writer With the win, Romeo will advance to tonight's district semifinal at Lake Orion against Rochester Hills Stoney Creek (14-7), who beat Clarkston, 54-43, Monday evening, at Rochester Hills. Behind five points from Ashley Flinn (game-high 26 points), the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and led 14-6 after one quarter. Meanwhile the Wildcats, who looked tight, didn't score a point until 3:24 in the first on a three-pointer from Megan Tilley. In fact, Tilley, who led Oxford with 13 points, scored all six of the Cats' points when she hit another three-pointer with under a minute left in the first. "Last year really helped us prepare for this game,'' Romeo Coach Connie Hernden said. "We look like a team that is prepared to play more than one game this week and that can make all the difference in the world.'' The Wildcats finally settled down in the second quarter and actually outscored the Bulldogs 14-12 to cut the Romeo lead to 26-20 at the half. Romeo point guard Shanyn McIntyre (12 points, all three-pointers) hit a couple of big trey's to keep Oxford from drawing even closer."I felt very comfortable out there tonight,'' McIntyre said. "There is no doubt that what we did last year helped us feel more confident going into this year. Even though we lost Paige (Sickmiller) and the others to graduation, we know what to expect now.'' The third quarter was a high scoring affair with the two teams combining for 37 points and, thanks to a last second layup by Flinn, Romeo still led, 46-37. The Bulldogs had never trailed at this point in the game, but the Wildcats were still hanging around and when Shelby Davis hit a free throw to cut the lead to eight points at 46-38 early in the fourth quarter, you could feel the energy in the gym change. However, Romeo answered with a near perfect offensive possession that was capped by a three-pointer from senior Katie Becker (her only points of the night) for a 49-38 lead. "We were patient and really moved the ball around until we found the open shot,'' Hernden said of her team's execution on the play. "It really was a big shot, you could just see the air go out of them.'' The Bulldogs dominated from there and would eventually open up a 20-point lead before cruising to victory. Flinn, who also had seven rebounds and five steals, spent most of the fourth quarter at the free throw line. Flinn shot 21 free throws and made 16. As a team, the Bulldogs were 18-for-23 at the charity stripe, while Oxford was 10-of-14 at the line. Jessica Ratkiewicz and Megan Payne had four points each and Katherine Yops had two for Romeo. |
